Amazon has released a new version of its Fire HD 8 tablet that is optimised for reading books, the Reader’s Edition. By bundling some extras with the regular tablet, Amazon is aiming at people who spend a lot of their time reading.
The Fire HD 8 Reader’s Edition combines existing services and accessories with a new feature and sells the whole bundle for a lot less than you would pay if they were purchased individually.
It consists of the latest Fire HD 8, an 8in tablet that runs Fire OS 5 Bellini, Amazon’s customised version of Android, a limited edition leather cover and a year’s access to Kindle Unlimited. Amazon says the price of $249.99 is $100 cheaper than if everything was bought separately.
Kindle Unlimited provides access to over one million books, including many popular titles like the Harry Potter series, The Man in the High Castle, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and so on. It normally requires a subscription of $9.99 a month, which is $120 for a year, but is included in the price of the Fire HD 8 Reader’s Edition.
There have been studies looking at the effects of using phones and tablets in bed and it is thought that exposure to blue light late at night makes it harder to get to sleep. Although it is not noticeable, the light produced by tablet and phone screens contains blue light.
For people that like to read in bed the tablet includes a feature called Blue Shade, which aims to reduce eye strain and enable you to get a good night’s sleep.
This reduces the amount of blue light given off by the screen late at night and changes it to a warmer colour. The display brightness is also reduces to make the screen more comfortable to view in a darkened room. Blue Shade’s settings can be customised and it can easily be turned off if you don’t want it.
The rustic brown leather case completes the bundle and it makes the tablet feel like a high quality book. It not only feels good, it looks good and, of course, it protects the tablet from knocks and scratches. It folds flat for one-handed reading or it can be used to stand the tablet in landscape or portrait mode.
