The lock screen on your Android phone is an opportunity to show useful information and notifications, and provide fast access to your favourite apps. SnapLock is designed to make the most of it.
One of the great features of Android is the ease with which it can be customised and SnapLock makes use of this to provide an alternative lock screen – the screen you see when you tap the power button to wake it up.
SnapLock provides five functions:
Notifications: Viewing notifications on the lock screen can be very useful and SnapLock replaces Android notifications with its own system. In the app settings, you can choose which apps are allowed to display notifications. It is very easy to configure and apps are listed with the most used first, and then alphabetically. You just tap the ones you want to see notifications from.
Dashboard: Swipe right on the lock screen and the dashboard is displayed. This shows the weather forecast and calendar information. The forecast shows the weather for the next 10 hours or so. This is useful and you can see whether sun or rain is coming up in the next few hours and what the temperature will be. The calendar information saves you having to open your calendar to see your appointments and tasks.
App shortcuts: A button in the bottom right corner of the lock screen enables you to access apps. This is more useful if you don’t have a PIN or password because you can run them straight from the lock screen. Only five apps are displayed, but you can choose the ones you want or let the app decide. SnapLock can access app usage data on the device and automatically put your most used apps on the lock screen app menu. It’s a clever trick and quite useful too.
Keypad and pattern passcode: SnapLock replaces the device’s security and you can define a PIN code or pattern to unlock it. There isn’t much to say about this apart from that it works. A nice feature is that you don’t have to tap OK or Enter with the PIN, you just tap the digits and you are in.
Wallpaper: The background image used on the lock screen is automatically changed every so often. They seem to reflect the time of day and are darker at night than during the day. The images are excellent and there is some great photography.
SnapLock is a good replacement for the standard lock screen in Android and it provides useful features and nice wallpaper images. It adds extra features by providing shortcuts to your most used apps, you can respond to notifications, such as by replying to emails, and you can view a forecast and calendar appointments. SnapLock is recommended.
