Do you read comics on your Android phone or tablet? Google just solved one of the most annoying problems and Bubble Zoom makes comics 100% better. Here’s how it works on your device.
Comics are great fun and if you are a fan you might want to check out the latest version of Google Play Books. Go to the Google Play Store, open the menu at the side, select My Apps & Games, and then update your apps if necessary.
Open Play Books and go to the Store - tap the menu icon and then press Store. Browse the the latest Marvel comics and DC Comics and either buy one or use the option to read a free sample.
Open the comic in Play Books and you’ll find that it has a great new feature - Bubble Zoom. Some of the speech bubbles in comic books are quite small and you might struggle to read the text. Not any more!
Tap the right edge of the screen and the first speech bubble grows and zooms in. That’s just the speech bubble itself and not the whole screen. This enables you to read it more easily and it focuses your attention too.
Tap the right edge of the screen and the next speech bubble zooms for reading. Tap until all the speech bubbles have been zoomed and read, and the next tap moves on to the next page. It is a great idea!
Google is employing the same technology that it uses to recognise objects in photographs to recognise where the speech bubbles are in the pages of comics. All it took was a bit of retraining and it can then find and zoom speech bubbles with a tap. You can also use the phone or tablet volume up and down buttons to move between speech bubbles.
Bubble Zoom appears to require something in the comic itself and only DC comics and Marvel comics currently support the feature. I tried it in a Doctor Who comic and it didn’t work.
It is disappointing that it does not work for existing comics, but for any new ones that you buy, it should work fine. Go and check it out if you have not yet discovered this great new feature.
