Who remembers Age of Empires on the PC? It was released in 1997 and there were several follow-up titles over the years. Colonies vs Empire is similar and it is a real-time strategy game that involves building a city and an army. The army can be purely for defence or you can attack and plunder neighbouring cities. The way you play is up to you.
The game is set in 18th century colonial America and you start off with few basic buildings, such as a town hall and a barracks. You can build more buildings and upgrade existing ones, but you need to collect resources.
The resources are gold, wood and stone. At first you just need the first two and building a gold mine enables you to mine gold, and adding a sawmill enables you to make wood. At first, building simply require gold and wood, but later on you’ll need stone too and a quarry can be built.
The game is all about levelling up. Upgrade the town hall and you can build more gold mines and sawmills, and other buildings like a cartographer’s office to increase the map size, a church, which reduces the likelihood of attack, farms to provide food for people and so on.
The military training camp produces different types of troops, such as fusiliers and grenadiers, and even balloons that can drop bombs. Stables can be added that produce mounted troops and a military foundry can produce artillery.
What you do with your military might is up to you and it can be used purely for defence. Walls and towers can be placed around your growing city and the troops stationed at strategic points.
It is more fun engaging in battle though. There are two types and there is a quick battle against the system for a trophy and gold prize, or you can attack other players. Your troops can be organised into groups, sent to locations, ordered to form lines, squares and V shapes, attack buildings and so on. You can destroy a player’s buildings, kill their army and plunder their gold.
If you choose to attack other players, you can see an overview of their city before you attack and the app seems to choose people that are roughly at your level, so you can’t repeatedly attack weak players.
Like many games of this genre, building your city takes a long time. It can take hours to collect the resources and many more hours to upgrade a building. It is the sort of game that you run, upgrade a few buildings, then quit. Come back in a few hours and repeat the process.
You can’t sit down and play it for three hours because you will quickly run out of things to upgrade. This appeals to some people, but not to others. I quite like this sort of game, although after about a month of upgrading I tend to tire of the waiting around. I’m only on my second week and have just started battling others, so it is still at its interesting phase. For a free app with no adverts, this is well worth installing.
