The mobile phone is probably the most high tech piece of equipment you own. It can make phone calls, send text messages, play music, use GPS and mapping, measure your speed and altitude and much more. It makes a great gadget to have in your car – just get a phone car mount kit and the iBOLT Dock’n Drive app.
The app is designed to be used in the car and it has a number of features that make it useful when driving. For example, there is a large display of the current speed, which is calculated using GPS information. This is more accurate than a car speedometer, which can be up to 10% out and usually overestimates your speed.
The speed display can be switched to a large clock showing the time. Around the outside of the speed/clock display is a compass that shows which direction you are heading. Your current location is displayed as a line of text at the top of the app too.
The rest of the screen display is dedicated to making the phone easy to use when you are driving. There are just six large buttons and these are the most common ones you need. There is Voice Search, which is perfect for driving, Navigation in case you are not sure of the correct route, Contacts and Text Message.
The Text Message button does not let you make text messages because that would be dangerous while driving. Instead, it enables you to define an auto-respond message. This will be sent to the sender and could be something like “Sorry, I am driving. I’ll get back to you later.”
That is a really useful feature and in addition to this is the option to automatically answer phone calls either straight away or after a five second delay. When someone calls, you will not need to take your hands off the steering wheel to answer it.
At the bottom of the screen are controls for the music, with play/pause, next and previous track buttons. These save you fiddling around with the controls in music apps or trying to use the hardware buttons on the phone.
Although there are only six icons, there one is free and this can be assigned to any app on the phone. In addition to this, you can swipe left and right for additional screens of icons that you can set to run any app you want.
There is also a Dock Mode for people with active car docks for Samsung and HTC devices. Certain default settings can be enabled when the phone is docked, such as turning on Bluetooth, setting the audio volume, and a few others.
There are several apps designed for car use and iBOLT Dock’n Drive displays less information than some, but it focuses on making the phone easier to use. Big buttons, audio controls, auto-responders for text messages and so on, make this a useful tool.
