Sir David Attenborough is a broadcasting legend and for anyone that loves to watch wildlife programmes on the TV, this iOS and Android app has his 1,000 best wildlife clips. It is absolutely stunning!
At the grand old age of 90, the veteran broadcaster has released an app for phones and tablets that is simply amazing.
After an introduction from him, the clip library can be accessed and there are three sections. One is a featured collection of clips, another lets you browse the clips and the third is where you can store your favourites.
The clips are very high quality and Sir David sometimes recounts stories of what happened behind the scenes, such as sitting in the dark with zero visibility just a few metres away from lions, filming them getting ready to hunt their dinner. He could easily have been on the menu!
Every clip you think, “Wow, that is amazing”.
The clips look good on the phone or tablet, but you really need to stream it to your TV using an Apple TV or Google Chromecast. It is brilliant on the big screen and with 1,000 clips, you can watch for an hour or more at a time.
You could watch an hour a day for a month and still not get through the whole collection. It is huge!
The only slight disappointment was the navigation and I found it a bit awkward. You can flick through clips and spin a wheel to filter clips by topic or to fast forward through clips.
If you can get the hang of it, the clips can be filtered by categories like species, such as plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals and so on. Multiple filters can be created to narrow the clips to whatever interests you.
A search function enables you to find animals and plants by name, and there is an alphabetical list of all plants and animals. You can browse the list, tap an item and see all the clips available. There is also a random button that selects one of the 1,000+ clips to play.
That’s it really. It is just a clip collection, but it is amazing. There is video footage from 40 BBC TV programmes spread over 60 years, including Planet Earth, Blue Planet, The Life of Mammals, Africa and others.
This is a must-have app and you must watch it on your TV for the best experience.
