Recover lost photos on on any media storage

The increasing use of mobile phones for photography and the ease with which they can be backed up online means that lost photos are less of a problem for most people than it used to be. However, if you prefer to use a traditional camera and store your photos offline, you will be well aware of how frustrating it can be when photos go missing, are corrupted and will not load or transfer to the computer. Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery might be able to help.

The company specialises in recovery software for Apple Macs, Windows PCs and other systems. There are a wide range of useful tools and Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery (Mac) is worth considering if you have lost or corrupt photos no matter where they may be.

The software supports internal and external storage, such as hard disk drives, USB disks, and digital cameras. All of the most popular camera brands are supported, such as Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Fujifilm and many more. With external drives of over 2GB becoming cheaper and more common, it is useful to know that the software supports big disks.

Although the name of the software suggests that it only recovers photos, it actually does a lot more. It can recover video files and the following formats are supported: ASF, MP4, MOV, MPEG, DV, DIVX, HD MOV files and many more. All cameras take videos as well as photos and if there is a problem with the memory card you will want to recover those files too. Audio files are also supported and the files include MP3, AU, MIDI, OGG, AIFF, M4A and so on.

If you have a problem, will Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery find and recover your photographs, videos and audio? You will not know until you try it. The software can be downloaded and used for free, but you can only preview the files that can be recovered.

To actually recover them and save them elsewhere you have to register and it costs $39 for the standard package or $49.99 (a 35% discount was offered when I looked) for the Platinum Edition. The difference between the two is the ability to repair corrupt photos. The standard edition recovers photos and the Platinum Edition also fixes faults in files too.

I stopped using digital cameras several years ago and shoot exclusively on smartphones. Every shot is automatically backed up to the cloud, sometimes within minutes of it being taken. Many photo apps and online storage services offer to store your photos online, so it is easy to set this up and my photos actually get backed up to at least two online services.

This means that I don’t have any lost or corrupt photos to test with Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery. I rigged up a fairly simple test though and added a number of photos to a USB flash drive (or USB thumb drive) using a Windows PC. I then deleted them on Windows so they were gone - not even in the Recycle Bin. I then formatted the USB flash drive for good measure too.

It was then inserted into an Apple Mac and Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery run used to see if the photographs could be recovered.

The software offered to scan the USB flash drive immediately and even though it is just under 4GB, it was actually quite a fast scan that took only a minute. Afterwards, the files that were found were organised into Photos and Videos and then subfolders contained JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and so on, one for each file type.

The files can be displayed using the usual Finder-like view controls such as list, cover flow and icons. All the files that I had added to the USB flash drive (deleted and then formatted), were there.

That is as far as you can go with the free download of Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery. You can find and view lost files, but to actually recover them and save them you must register it, a one-off payment of $39 (standard) or $49.99 (Platinum Edition).

If you have lost or corrupt photos and no backup, I would recommend downloading and running the software. Check that it can find and display your lost images, and if it can, go ahead and pay the registration fee. There is no point in buying it and then discovering that it cannot find your files.

It does seem to work and I was impressed that it found not only the files I deliberately deleted, but others from ages ago that I had forgotten about and deleted a long time ago. Of course, real-world situations are rarely as straightforward as my test, so don't expect miracles, but I recommend that you try it.
