Avira free VPN service for Mac secures your internet connection

Keep your internet activity private when in public by securing your connection with a VPN

Your internet connection needs to be secure for many online activities, but sometimes it is not, such as when using public Wi-Fi hotspots. Avira Phantom VPN connection makes sure no-one can spy on you.

Public Wi-Fi is not always secure and this is especially true if there is no need to enter a password for WPA security. This means that it is possible for someone else at the hotspot or the hotspot operator to spy on your internet activity.

This means that it is unsafe to do anything that requires logging into services and certainly not online banking and shopping.

It is technically possible for someone to capture your usename and password at a public Wi-Fi hotspot, although the chances of a hacker sitting at the table next to you in a cafe, hotel or other public place has to be small.

What is a VPN?

VPN software (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure and encrypted connection between your computer and the VPN server.

This eliminates eavesdropping on your internet communications because it is encrypted and impossible to read, even if someone could access it.

The VPN server acts as an intermediary, forwarding your internet activity to and from the websites or services you want to access.

Secure the internet with a VPN

When out in public with your MacBook you should use a VPN for security.

Is Avira Phantom the best VPN? That’s hard to say and the performance of VPNs tends to vary a lot depending on the number of people using a particular server. Performance tests can be all over the place, but it is certainly a very easy VPN to use and it could not be simpler.

It worked well during testing and there were no problems.

Avira Phantom VPN is installed in a few seconds and when it is run, it adds an extra icon to the menu bar. When this is clicked, it opens a panel that shows the status. Clicking Secure my connection establishes a VPN between your Mac and VPN server.

Your network connection is then secure and the internet can be used in the usual way. Just run apps and browsers as usual and they just work.

The panel shows the amount of data transferred over the internet and there is a 500MB limit for free. You don’t want to watch online video as this will use up all your free data in no time. Use it when you need to shop online, access your bank, and similar activities.

A paid plan with unlimited data is available for a small monthly fee if you are a heavy internet user. Don’t forget you can switch off the VPN when at home or at work where your internet connection is secure anyway, so 500MB might not be that limiting.

Register the software and your free limit is increased to 1GB, which is well worth doing.

Tip: Click the profile icon in the panel to create an account

An important feature of a VPN for some people is the ability to appear to be some place else. For example, you can appear to be located in Germany, UK, US, and other countries around the world.

This enables you to access local information and services like you were living there, although you do have to bear in mind local laws and website and service terms and conditions (Netflix doesn’t like you doing this for example).

Avira provides several server locations around the world and you can easily select the country from a list.

Tip: Connect to the Wi-fi hotspot first, then enable Phantom VPN.

If you are looking for a secure VPN to make accessing the web from public Wi-Fi hotspots safer, Avira Phantom VPN will do the job.

I am on the free 500MB plan at the moment, but will register and get the 1GB. That should be enough for me, but check out the paid plan if you need more.
