Now is a good time to buy an old Apple Mac and grab a bargain

The Refurbished Store on the Apple website is the place to get a cheap Mac

Many people have been complaining about the prices of Apple’s latest MacBooks, but it is worth pointing out (again) that there are some bargains to be found in the Apple Store if you know where to look.

The new MacBooks from Apple look fantastic. They lack a few sockets and you’ll need a few dongles to get your gadgets to work, but otherwise they are great.

Of course it would be nice to own one of the latest models, but do you really need one though? The previous models are still on sale, although they are hidden in the Apple Store, and their prices have been knocked down by up to $200.

If you want to cheap MacBook or iMac, here’s how to get one. It is your last chance to buy an 11in MacBook Air and other models, so grab one while you can.

Refurbished Macs

Refurbished Macs (iPads and iPods too), are old stock and are usually previous generation models that are being sold off at discounted prices.

They are all in the original packaging and are treated as new by Apple, so you get the same warranty and service as if you were buying a new Mac. You get a new Mac, just not the latest specification, but last year’s Macs were pretty good.

Find a bargain

The MacBooks and iMacs for sale change from week to week as old stock is sold off and is replaced by newer items. For this reason, the bargains I found may or may not be available when you read this. There might be different bargains and some might even be better!

There was a 11.6in MacBook Air with 1.6GHz Dual Core i5, 4GB of 1600MHz memory, 256GB PCIe-based flash storage, 720p FaceTime HD Camera, and Intel HD Graphics 6000. The price was $929, which is $170 off the normal price.

There was a great 13.3in MacBook Pro with 2.7GHz Dual Core i5, Retina display, 8GB of 1866MHz memory, 128GB storage, 720p FaceTime HD Camera, and
Intel Iris Graphics 6100. If you don’t mind the limited storage or have an external drive handy, the bargain price of $1099 looks tempting. That is $200 off. It also has a full set of sockets - USB, Thunderbolt, MagSafe, HDMI and SD card.

If you prefer an iMac, I spotted an excellent 21.5in 2.8GHz Quad Core i5, HD screen, 8GB memory, 1TB hard drive, Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200, and FaceTime HD camera for $1099. That is $200 off.

Generally, the more expensive the iMac or MacBook, the bigger the discount and there were some models that offered savings of $430 over the price you would pay in the Apple Store.

The models offered in the refurbished store vary from country to country. Here in the UK I spotted a MacBook with the latest specification (April 2016) for £1,059. That is £190 cheaper than the exact same spec MacBook in the Apple Store.

Now you know where the bargains are in the store, stop moaning about the prices!
