Protect your Mac with AVG Antivirus before it is too late

There is no doubt about it, Apple Macs are becoming more popular and so to is malware for OS X. It is inevitable really and the more people that buy Macs, the bigger the target for malware authors. You really should consider antivirus software before it is too late.

AVG has been making antivirus software for Windows PCs for years and the company's free program is among the most popular. There is also a antivirus app for the Apple Mac too and like the Windows version, it is free of charge. It does no harm to run an antivirus program in the background and because it is free, what is there to lose?

AVG Antivirus for Mac is a very simple program with few controls, menus or settings. There are three components on the screen and on the left is Mac Scanner. It has a button and clicking it scans the Mac's disk drive for malware.

In the middle is a drop target and you can drag files to it and drop them to scan them. It also has a button and this can be used to select a folder to scan, such as the Downloads folder.

On the right is the realtime protection status and an on/off switch. I can't see any reason why you would want to switch it off, but the facility is there if you need it.

The preferences offer a few options, such as whether to scan archives. I always turn this off in vrus scanners because I have a zillion zips on my disk and it would take too long to scan the contents. External drives can be included in the scan too.

There is an option to scan for PUPs and these are potentially unwanted programs. They are not always viruses and they can simply be irritating, such as extensions for web browsers to alter the search engine or display adverts.

Mac antivirus software is typically super easy to use and once installed, you should not notice that it is there. It just runs in the background and checks that everything is OK. It does not seem to affect the Mac's performance and it keeps it safe from malware. Not that there is a lot around, but you never know. Mac users have been caught out in the past and there are sure to be outbreaks in the future.
