Remove Apple Mac malware with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

At one time the Apple Mac never used to become infected with adware or malware, but times have changed. It still isn’t time to panic, but it is still good to have tools like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed.

Viruses, Trojans and other types of malware are thankfully still quite rare on the Mac and OS X is either fairly resistant to them or the size of the Mac user base still isn’t big enough for malware authors to bother with. (Windows is such a big and profitable target.) It is hard to tell which is true and it is probably a bit of both that keeps Mac users fairly safe.

Fairly safe does not mean completely safe and occasionally Mac malware hits the news as it spreads throughout the Apple community.

Adware is more common than viruses on OS X and Facebook groups dedicated to the Apple Mac often have posts from people that have Macs infected with adware. It pops up adverts on the screen, redirects the browser to some other website, usually to show adverts, ruins searches, and generally interferes with the running of the Mac. Adware infected Macs run very poorly indeed and it is surprising how many Mac users have adware infected Macs.

The adware usually comes from downloads of software on the internet, but it is not in the Mac App Store. If your only source of software is Apple then you are very unlikely to ever see adware, spyware, viruses and other types of malware. It is a good way to avoid malware and adware.

The problem is that there are lots of great apps outside of the Mac App Store on various websites and it is tempting to download software from them. Many are fine and are quite safe, but if you see cracked apps and free versions of commercial software then steer well clear because they could be harbouring malware.

See Has MacUpdate fallen to the adware plague? for the sort of problems that can occur. It is best to avoid downloading from software download sites and to get your software direct from the developer. Software downloaded from developers is fairly safe and trustworthy.

If your Mac accidentally  becomes infected with adware or malware, a clean-up tool is the first thing to try and there are several to choose from. Malwarebytes has one of the best tools for removing malware on Windows PCs and the company has years of experience with detecting it and removing it.

It is interesting that the company now has an Apple Mac version of its adware and malware removal tool. It is free of charge and is quite a small and compact app that takes up little disk space.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is not a real-time protection tool and it will not prevent adware or malware from installing. What is does is to clean up the system after your Mac has become infected. It removes adware like Genieo, VSearch and Vidx, and removes malware like Trojans.

This is a tool that you can keep on your Mac just in case. You might never need it, but if you do, you will be glad you have it. Adware messes up browsers by taking them over and this makes them hard to use. You don’t want to be trying to download the app with an infected Mac. Download it now while it is clean and running OK, and then it is ready if you ever need it.

My Mac was clean anyway and a scan of the system turned up nothing, so I cannot say how effective it is at removing bad infections. However, the app is small and free, so I’ll keep it just in case the worst happens one day.

One other thing that the app can do apart from scanning, is to generate a system report. This is a comprehensive list of the state of the Mac - software, extensions, settings and so on. If you ever need to contact someone about technical support, you could copy the report and paste it into an email.
