LaCie ships world's fastest disk drive

In January LaCie, the premium brand of Seagate Technology, announced that it had developed the world's fastest external disk drive, the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2. Today you can buy it and this super fast drive is now shipping. It's small, it's portable and it's incredibly fast.

LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2It's high speed comes from the fact that it uses Thunderbolt 2 ports and it has two of them, so you can daisy chain other drives and peripherals.

Thunderbolt 2 is available on the latest Apple Macs and it offers speeds of up to 1,375MB per second data transfers. This is much faster than USB 3, so if you are looking for the ultimate performance from an external disk drive, this would seem ideal.

In order to achieve its high speed, the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt incorporates a set of 500GB PCIe Gen 2 SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. It is also quiet and special considertion has been made to the cooling.

It incorporates a fan, but it is thermoregulated and only comes on when it is needed. With the SSDs and light use it should be silent.

The drive has been created for people that work with large files on external drives. For example, when streaming, editing or recording 4K videos. With RAW digital camera photos increasing in size too, it makes sense to have a fast drive.

It is so small it fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just 620g. This is a drive you can carry and use on the go.

Here in the UK the cost is £999 inc VAT for 1TB of storage, which isn't cheap, but then cutting edge technology always has a high price.
