Some books are free because they are classic ones that were written a long time ago and I am going to grab a copy of The Invisible Man by Jules Verne. It is a great story and it was even was made into a film and TV series years ago. Another classic is 12 Years a Slave, which was turned into an award winning film only a couple of years ago.
To find free books, start your web browser and go to the Google Play Store at play.google.com
Click Books in the left panel to access the book store and it displays recommended books, amazing deals and more. Ignore these for the moment and click Top Charts.
At the top are the Most Popular Books, but below it is Most Popular Free Books. These are the ones we want. Click the See more button in the bottom right corner.
Here are the most popular free books. They are not the only free ones and there are many more if you explore the book store, but it is a good place to start. There are classics like Treasure Island, The Three Musketeers, 12 Years a Slave, and many more.
Click a book cover, such as The Invisible Man, and the book details page appears. It tells you the author, rating, and below is a description outlining the story. Click the Free button.
This is normally where you would pay, but the price is £0.00 and there is a simple ADD TO LIBRARY button. Click it.
A few seconds later, the page is updated and there are CLOSE and READ buttons. You can read it now by clicking READ or read it later if you click CLOSE.
I chose to read it now and here it is. As with any book you have to open the cover and skip through the first few pages to get to the start of chapter 1. Click the next page button in the bottom right corner to read the book.
There is a tiny Exit link in the top left corner. Click it to return to Google Play. My Books is automatically selected on the left. Add some more books and build up your library.
You don’t have to read a book all in one sitting. When you exit, the page you are on is saved automatically and when you reopen the book, it opens at the same page so you can carry on reading.
If you have the Google Play Books app on your phone or table, the book appears in there too, so you can read it anywhere, such as in bed, on the train or plane and so on.
